The Lion’s Pride: Interviewing

The Five Most Important Questions for You to Ask

What kind of questions do you ask when you're being interviewed?

Obviously, you want to sound intelligent and well-informed.  This is easy to accomplish by keeping a few techniques in mind:

Do your research.  The best way to sound well-informed is to be well-informed.  Check out the company's website.  Run a search on the web.  Find out what you can about the company.

Ask open-ended questions.  Asking questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no" will not provide much information.

Use the SDQ format.  Begin your questions with a Statement (or two) of fact or informed opinion.  This provides background for the question you'll be asking.  Then ask a Double Question.  This format shows you've done your research and you are a contender.

With that said, here are the five most important questions for you to ask:

  • “According to (an authority in the field, publication or elected official), the (field) industry, which ABC Inc. is in, is suffering from two straight years of decline.  What steps is ABC taking to fight that trend and where do you see someone in my position contributing the most?”

  • “I enjoy diving head first into new challenges.  To do this, I need to assimilate company procedures and culture.  How is your training structured and how do you choose your employee mentors?”

  • “To this point, we've discussed ABC's positives, as well as my own.  If offered this position, what would be the biggest drawback and why should I turn it down?”

  • “My research indicates this department has a high (or, conversely, low) employee turnover rate.  What do you feel is the three biggest contributing factors to this and what steps has management put in place to increase (or maintain) employee retention?”

  • “I'm certainly impressed with ABC's product lines and your quality service.  Why has your market share remained constant and what steps are being taken to improve ABC's share?”

IN THE CARAVAN: When asking questions in an interview, conduct ample research ahead of time, ask open-ended questions and use the SDQ format.
