An easy way to ensure a fit is to slightly alter the way you look at interviews.  Changing the way you think about interviews will change the way you approach them.  Here are three time-tested mental states you can use:

Hire your boss.  Determine whether a particular manager and/or company is qualified to employ you.  Ask yourself whether they have the existing group skills set and products to suit your needs.  Give your hiring decision some thought, too.  Hiring a boss that doesn't work out can be expensive.

You are the CEO.  That's right, you are the CEO - of your life.  And, as such, you need to make sure projects stay on budget, the details taken care of and timelines followed.  You also have to screen those who want to come on board.  Determine if the company culture meshes with how you're wired.

What can they do for you?  Ask how they can make you money, save you money and how they can add to your skills set.  Since you'll be assimilating them into your life, you should make sure they're not wasting your time.  Make sure they can provide a strong contribution to your life.

IN THE CARAVAN: When interviewing, remember that you are the CEO of your life.  That means you should find out what the company can do for you.  After all, you're hiring your boss.
