The Lion’s Pride: Interviewing

Nerves? Schmerves!

Interviewing and driving belong in the same category: everyone thinks they're really good at it.

The truth, however, is quite different. Those who think they're good drivers often don't use their turn signals, nor check their blind spots before changing lanes. Likewise, "good interviewees" often are…well…not good interviewees.

In this post, we'll focus on improving the quality of your interviews with three tips on quelling your nerves.

Practice, Practice, Practice. Cliché? Sure. Valuable, sound advice? You bet. Do you think Joe Montana threw perfect spirals when he started? Or that Michael Jordan dunked with grace and flair? No. They practiced. So it is with interviewing. You will only get better - and feel calmer - with practice. Ask a friend to get a friend of theirs you don't know to do the mock interview with you and dress to impress - this will help simulate an actual interview.

Make It Conversational. Too often, job seekers only provide answers, then ask questions when prodded to do so. By asking informed questions, the interviewer will hold you in higher esteem because you show confidence. Keep in mind - you're looking for the right job. You should be interviewing the company representative, as well. Lightly peppering your questions throughout the interview will also it more conversational, thus reducing your nerves.

Do Your Homework. Your mom was right. Doing your homework helps you succeed. Research the company on the Internet. Look for what products they offer, their niche and also check out what positive or negative press they received. This will enable you to ask appropriate questions and reduce your nerves.

IN THE CARAVAN: Reduce your interview nervousness by preparing. Practice, ask questions and research the company ahead of time.
