The Lion’s Pride: Networking

Double Dipping Doing Good

A friend of mine was laid off about ten years ago.  He would normally work at least two jobs, but his day job was going so well, he stayed with just one.

And then the other shoe landed.  He was laid off due to funding cuts.

So he did the only logical thing.  He volunteered.

That's right.  He worked.  For no money.

As a result, he landed a sweet job a few months later.  And he did it by double dipping.  Here's how:

He genuinely cared about the cause.  In my friend's case, he volunteered for a local historical society he loved.  His passion showed.  Not only did he land a job based on his volunteer experience, but the historical society hired him on as a caretaker for its flagship property.  As a result, he had a job and free room and board.

He expanded his experience and skills.  My friend went beyond his established comfort zone by founding a newsletter for the organization to go out to donors and volunteers.  He also developed new methods of recruiting and managing volunteers.  His new skills and experiences are what landed his new job.

He spread the word.  Sure, he was working for free, but he also spoke on behalf of the organization.  The person who hired him was in one of his audiences.  My friend showed you never know where your next job might come from.

IN THE CARAVAN: Double dip by doing good in the world while networking.  Care about your cause, expand your skills and speak on the organization's behalf.
