The Lion’s Pride: Networking

Press the Flesh Like a Pro

Introverted?  Shy?  Uncomfortable around others?

Relax.  So is – or was – everyone else.

It’s true.  Outgoing people weren’t born that way.  Great speakers weren’t either.  They did learn how to press the flesh/work rooms, however.  You can, too.

Start with who you almost know.  Have your friends and family introduce you to people they know.  Practice smiling.  Try out your handshake and small talk. This is often how friendships are made.

Move on to a larger supportive atmosphere.  Clubs are a great way to do this.  You probably won’t know many (or any) people there, but they’ll be eager to meet you.  Feel free to use the skills you’ve practiced in the step here.  And, if you make a mistake or two, don’t fret.  You’ll be in a supportive atmosphere.

Go “live.”  Step outside your comfort bounds.  Your flesh-pressing skills will be fairly well honed by this point, so you should approach this with confidence.  Go to career fairs, conventions and other places knowing you know how to work a room.

IN THE CARAVAN:  Learning to press the flesh in stages helps alleviate nerves.
