The Lion’s Pride: Networking

It's Not What You Know...

I'll bet you can finish that sentence.

How many times have you heard it's who you know?

And for good reason. According to recent labor statistics, 70% of all jobs out there are obtained through word of mouth. 70%!!! The remaining 30% are obtained through a combination - combination(!) - of the Internet, newspapers, help wanted signs, etc.

If you were placing a wager, where would you put your money?

You should do the same with your time.

Many of my clients do the opposite. They spent countless hours scouring the web, sending out cover letters and resumes, filling out online applications and the like, but fail to even spend an hour reaching out to their network.

Before you say otherwise - you do have a network. And it's bigger than you think.

Consider for a moment that most of us know about 300 people (you probably wouldn't ask every one of them to house sit while you're on vacation, but you get the idea). Now, if every one of them knows 300 (there will be some overlap, of course), you're looking at 90,000 people within the first two tiers of your network! 90,000!!!

I humbly suggest to you that if you can not find a job lead somewhere in those 90,000 people, you might want to meet a new bunch of 300 people.

IN THE CARAVAN: Spend 70% of your time networking, 30% looking online and in publications.
