Networking Out of Town: Laying the Foundation

                                                                   

Thinking about "moving out of Dodge?"  You're not alone.  Many workers, at one point or another, contemplate changing locales to improve job prospects.

Before you make the leap though, ask yourself three simple questions:

 

 

Where do you want to live?  Are you moving to a warm climate?  Portland, Maine? What do you know about the town?  Have you visited?  What is it about your target city that attracts you?  You should find out everything you can about the city before going much further to find out what it has to offer.  For instance, what's the cost of living vs. average wage in your chosen field?  Does the city have a major (or minor) league sports team or are there more cows than people?

Who do you know there?  Do you already have friends and/or relatives in your target city?  Former co-workers?  Spouse or significant other?  It's important to know someone in your target city, even if it's a tenuous connection.  Relocating without a support system can be very difficult and, in many cases, downright lonely.  Shaking your family tree or hitting one of the reunion or classmates websites can often provide a "starter friend" until you get a support system built up.

What contacts can you develop before getting there?  Contacts are your life blood when networking out of town.  They can "lend" you their networks until you build one of your own.  Here, being a member of a national - or international - organization car really help.  For instance, if you belong to Kiwanis, Rotary or Toastmasters International, then you know there are chapters of those clubs in most cities and towns throughout North America.  You also most likely have access to directories of members of those clubs.  These directories are ideal places to start building your network.  If you are not a member of a large organization, then have a close contact of yours who IS a member help network you to members in your target city.
