The Lion’s Pride: Networking

'Running' Into Contacts

You've probably made New Year's Resolutions at some point in your life.

And you've probably broken those resolutions within a week.  (A day? A couple minutes?)

It doesn't have to be that way.  You can, in fact, make sure your "health resolution(s)" stick while looking for work.  That's right!  You can look for work AND get healthy at the same time!  Here are a few networking/health resolutions you definitely can keep:

"I will work out with other people."  Go to a gym a couple times each week.  If you've decided to take up running, join a running club.  These are excellent networking opportunities for you.  You learn a lot about people when they're sweating.  The bonus, here, is that when you partner with others at a gym or in a club, it becomes a commitment; you're obligated to participate.

"I will compare workout notes with others."  This is a great casual ice-breaker.  Don't be afraid to ask workout advice if it's a tough session for you.  Feel free to motivate those not on their game.  You will demonstrate - and build - your teaming and leadership skills this way.

"I will casually bring up my exercise program when meeting people."  You can open a great many doors by mentioning that 5K you're training for, or the yoga class you joined, or even the scenery on your bike route.  The other person will likely take note of your outside activity, and may even involved in it, too.  Exercise is a great bonding experience.

IN TODAY'S CARAVAN:  Keep your job search and health-related resolutions this year by making them pull double-duty.
