The Lion’s Pride: Networking

Getting Info From Sally & Co., Part I

Sally works for Mr. Smith.  Judy works for Mr. Jones.  Ruth works for Ms. Greene.

Mr. Smith, Mr. Jones and Ms. Greene would be lost with out them.

You could even put their relationship in analogy form:

Sally : Mr. Smith :: Shaun Alexander  : Mike Holmgren

They don't work in a vacuum.  Sally talks with Judy and they both talk with Ruth.  They know more than anyone about how XYZ, Inc. works.  And they can help you network your way into the company if you ask right.

Know what info you want.  Sally, Judy and Ruth are extremely busy.  Don't approach them without knowing what you want.  This is akin to a bench warming tight end approaching an assistant coach...just because.  The tight end will continue to ride the pine.

Know what questions to ask.  The ladies don't have the time to guess what it is you're really after.  Write questions down in advance to save time.  Our tight end would, for instance, ask the assistant coach what he can do to crack the starting line up.

Know how to read them.  If Sally, Judy and Ruth aren't receptive to your approach, be flexible enough to change the play before the ball is snapped.  For instance, if Matt Hasselbeck  reads the Steelers'  blitz formation this Sunday, he will likely change the play call.

IN THE CARAVAN: When approaching Sally & Co. for networking information, know what  you want, how to ask for it, and how to change your approach.
