The Lion’s Pride: Networking

Shrek Style

Shrek is a loveable ogre.  Yes, he can be grumpy.  And yes, he's green with funny looking ears.

But he also has the right idea about networking.  So do his friends.

Shrek.  Mike Myers’ character tried to explain that ogres are like onions - with layers.  That's a great metaphor for finding the right contact person in an organization, too.  Ever try to find a contact person in a large company?  The right contact person?  It can be daunting.  Corporations are like...well...like onions - with layer upon layer.  You can find the right person.  And when you do, they may have their guard up.  You'll need to make them less defensive.  Why, you could say developing a professional relationship is like...well...like onions - with layers.

Donkey.  Sure, he's funny.  And annoying.  But he kept hanging around Shrek.  He wasn't shy about asking him for his help and his friendship.  Shrek didn't get rid of him, however.  Even when he tried, Donkey kept coming back.  As it turns out, Shrek needed Donkey as much as Donkey needed Shrek.  Persistence paid off.

Puss In Boots.  He started off as an advisory.  As sometimes happens, however, the enemies joined forces; he struck up a symbiotic friendship with Shrek, Donkey and Fiona.  Competitors became allies.  By working through their issues, they formed a formidable team.  You might find the same is true for you.

IN THE CARAVAN: Networking like Shrek and his companions can pay dividends.
