Q: I
had a great second interview, during which I was told I’d be contacted in a
week. Well, that week ended yesterday. I called today and was
told it would take a couple days more. Should I follow up
again?

A:
No. The ball is in their court.
There are exceptions,
of course, but as a rule, one follow up is plenty. There are at
least two very good reasons why:
|
Check your performance so far. Your first interview obviously went well enough
to warrant a second interview. Did anything in the second conflict
with what you said in the first? Did you send a thank you note after
the second interview? At the second interview (and later), it’s
the little things that make a difference.
There’s a fine line between persistence and
stalking. Many years ago,
I faced the same situation. The hiring manager said she would contact
me by a specific date. I called the day after it had passed. She said I’d be
contacted in three days. I called the fourth day. More time,
she asked. So I waited a couple days and called, getting her voice
mail. I tried the next morning. Same deal. That afternoon, I
received the dreaded “we’ve hired somebody else” form letter. In
essence, I had talked myself out of a job.
IN THE CARAVAN: Make one follow up call, then
allow the prospective employer to make the next move.
