Q: Is
it possible to get a good, high-paying job without a degree?
A: You bet. It's just not as easy to get one.

While getting a degree
is a good thing to have (shows commitment, demonstrates you know how to
learn, etc.), it's not absolutely essential. Case in point: Bill
Gates is a college dropout...and he seems to be doing okay for himself.

But there are others who
have succeeded without degrees. They may have grown their skills
through the years within one company or their experience may outweigh their
lack of academic credentials.
The bulk of degree-less successes, however, have
two important traits in common: drive and an ability to communicate.
In fact, it can be argued that those without degrees have to have more drive and more communication skills because they're starting behind those
with degrees.
Here's the downside: well-paid degree-less workers, once laid off, have a
much, MUCH harder time reaching
the same level within another company. They often are forced to take much
lower paying jobs. This is in stark contrast to those who with degrees who have a much easier
time because...well, because they don't have to explain how their
experience is worth as much as a degree.
If you don't have a degree, you may want to consider getting one.
Thanks to technology, now you can take classes on your home computer when
they fit into your schedule. There are many funding opportunities, as
well. Now, there are no reasons to avoid getting a degree.
We'll be addressing online classes and funding opportunities in future
posts. Stay tuned.
