You’ve probably
considered having a website and/or blog to help publicize yourself, thereby
aiding your chances of interviews and landing a job.

It’s a good idea. Increasingly, employers
are running prospective employees’ names through Google. This means
you can impact the online “press” you get. But what service should
you go with?
|
Obviously, you’ll want to keep the cost down and
quality up. There are scores of sites that offer free and discounted
blogging services and free websites. But they’re not all created
equal. If you want to have an online presence, you might try one of
these:
Blogger. It’s free. It’s even free of ads.
What more could you want? It’s easy to use, allows you to upload
pictures and has tons of other features. You can audio blog (a.k.a.
podcast) from your phone (or cell). You can even email your posts if
you’re really in a time crunch and can’t log on. It even allows – and
encourages – you to put Google Adsense ads on your blog (it is, after all,
owned by Google). How good is this service? We started
WildJobSafari there, so you know it’s good!
GoDaddy. Longtime WildJobSafari readers probably
remember the GoDaddy banners at the top of our pages when we started our
site. Those banners weren’t too obnoxious and didn’t take away from
the over design of the site too much. The best part? You can
“dot com” yourself for less than $10 per year – and that price includes
tons of web space and a free blog. Uploading files is a snap with
their ftp client, too. An outstanding value!
GeoCities. Look – not everyone is a web
designer. Thankfully, with this granddaddy-of-them-all free hosting
site, you don’t have to be. They have good WYSIWYG (what you see is
what you get) templates and upload wizards to help you make your site look
sharp! The downside? It’s ad supported – and their ad may
temporarily cover some of your content until it auto-minimizes.
IN THE CARAVAN: When setting up a job-related blog or website,
