It's human nature to want more.
Gordon
Gecko, the villainous tycoon in the movie Wall
Street, gave a convincing speech on the virtues of greed.
"Greed," he said, "is good."

Most of us lack the all-consuming lust for
bucks that Michael
Douglas' character had, but we do want more than what we have.
We want larger retirement nest eggs, better cars and bigger
homes.
|
Which means, of course, we need
better jobs than the ones we have.
How do we get these better jobs? By preparing
while we have our current jobs. That means getting your resume in
shape first (if you haven't been keeping it up to date already). You
also need to show your current employer respect while getting your resume
out to potential employers.
Reassess
what you have. Is your
current job on your resume? What about the skills, duties and
achievements you've gained since you've last updated? Brainstorm to
fill in the gaps. Stack your resume to take advantage of
technology. Write muscularly. In short, revise and overhaul.
Show
respect. Most employers
who notice an employee using company resources to hunt for work will take
action. They may strongly reprimand the worker, reduce computer
access or even fire them. Don't let this happen to you. Look
for other employment on your own time and not with company resources.
Remember - the next person you interview with might just know your current
supervisor. You don't want to start behind the eight ball.
Send 'em out.
Email your resume. Post it online. Bring a few copies wherever
you go. Hey - your resume won't do any good if nobody sees it.

THE CARAVAN: When Preparing to
change companies, update your resume, don't use company resources and make
sure people see your resume.
