Under Cover (Letters, That Is) IV:

Word Smithing the Last Paragraph

In today's post, we conclude our four-part series on word smithing your cover letter (See Part I, II and III) with a look at your third (and final) paragraph.

The last paragraph is the least complex.  It should however, contain a few basic parts:

Restating your interest.  This is a good redundancy, as it takes your cover letter full circle.  It lends an air of symmetry.  Be careful not to come off as pleading, but rather curious to learn more about the position.

Restating your contact information.  Yes, your name, address, home and cell phone numbers, as well as your e-mail address are listed above, but you should also go one step further by mentioning only your cell and email info as ways to schedule an interview or ask questions.  This narrows employers' choices, thereby lessening the chance that you'll miss "the call."

Mentioning the enclosure(s).  Allude to your resume. Mention your letters of reference.  Even mention the copies of your portfolio that you've included.  This will show you're not bulk mailing, as doing so is rather expensive.  It shows you're very interested in THIS position at THIS company.  Your enclosures will also put you several steps ahead of the others vying for the gig.

IN THE CARAVAN: In the final paragraph of your cover letter, restate your interest and contact info, and also mention your enclosure(s).
