The Lion’s Pride: Adding Value

Demonstrating and Honing Your Leadership Chops, Part 1

You already know employers like leaders. The catch, though, is how to demonstrate your leadership to prospective employers with whom you have no track record. Further, how to you improve your leadership abilities?

According to Douglas Johnston, President of The Leadership Handprint, he and other employers look for several leadership abilities:

"How do they deal with the transition? Are they positive about it? Do they take accountability, or do try to blame others? This shows me how they might lead in the workplace.

"Have they taken advantage of resources and been resourceful in pursuing those available to them? This shows if they will be resourceful in the workplace.

"How do they network? I look to see if they help others and how they respect the network. This one is interesting. This shows you what type of person they are. It is interesting how many people milk the network. Do they ask the person they network with what they can do to help that person? And do they follow up?

"What is their vision for what they want to do? Have they thought through what they are looking for, the type of company, type of job and type of work environment they want?

"The communication style of the person and their follow up is also a key leadership attribute."

Johnston also suggests several ways to fine tune your leadership abilities:

"Look who you associate with, who you try to spend time with, and your professional associations. I will ask what groups they have joined or associated.

"Give back to the community. I also want to see how they give back to community.

"Read books. I will ask what books a candidate has read recently, or leaders they look up to or model."

IN THE CARAVAN: Demonstrate your leadership abilities by being positive, resourceful, having a vision and correctly networking. Grow your skills by giving back to the community and reading.
