The Lion’s Pride: Adding Value

S.M.I.L.E. to Get Ahead

The Mary Tyler Moore Show always began with the musical question: "Who can turn the world on with a smile?"  YOU can turn the world - the work world, that is - on with a smile.  Or rather, a S.M.I.L.E.

Smile.  That's right, doggone it!  Smile!  Aside from making people wonder what you're up to, smiling will add value to your career.  You'll appear friendlier and more attractive, which will lead people to like you.  Studies have also suggested that because you're using fewer facial muscles to smile than to frown, cranial blood flow is increased.  Better blood flow equals better brain operation.  Besides - your mood is usually better when you smile.

Make a commitment.  Committing obligates you to see the project through.  Committing obligates you to make the project the best it can be.  Committing obligates your time and resources.  This locks you in and focuses your attention.  Of course, when you have so much invested in the project, you will want success - and often WILL the success to happen.  Making a commitment makes you successful.

Interest.  Show interest in those you come in contact with.  Ask them questions about their vocations as well as their avocations.  If you show interest, you will appear intelligent and eager to learn.

Look from a different angle.  Ever see a tap dancing horse do a jig sideways?  The horse can as long as it doesn't wear blinders.  Even if success is all but guaranteed, look at the project from a totally different - if not ridiculous - point of view.  It could well improve the still-to-be-finished project.  Take those blinders off.

Enjoy.  Enjoyment reduces stress.  Enjoyment leads to success.  Einstein once said words to the effect of: "Excellence breeds enjoyment."  The equation works both ways: if you enjoy, you have a better chance of success.

IN THE CARAVAN: S.M.I.L.E. to get ahead.
