The Lion’s Pride: Adding Value

Sudoku

It’s hard to miss Sudoku puzzles lately.  They’re in newspapers, online, at airports, bookstores, and you can even solve the puzzles on your Blackberry.

The rules of this Japanese-gift-to-the-world are pretty simple.  Inside a square, there are nine smaller squares containing nine squares.  Some numbers are already in place.  Your goal is to put the numbers 1-9 in each square, row and column.  The trick, though, is that you cannot repeat any number in any row, column or square.

So how does this add value to you as a worker or a job hunter?

It requires concentration.  Some of the puzzles are relatively easy.  Others? Not so much.  As one progresses toward more challenging puzzles, the concentration needed increases.  The same thing happens in the workplace: as your position becomes more difficult, so too must your focus.

It makes you think differently.  Or, it works your brain like a muscle.  Muscles need a reason to grow and become stronger.  Increased the difficulty of the exercise and changing the exercises give them that reason.  Ditto with your brain.  The stronger your brain gets, the more adept you’ll become at solving everyday work-related challenges.  This increases your odds of landing a job – and getting promoted.

It gives you an additional commonality.  There are millions of people joining the Sudoku bandwagon.  With so many people on board, it gives you an additional point of reference in building rapport whether you’re networking or interviewing.  Think of it as the new “corporate mental golf.” It gives you something else in common.

IN THE CARAVAN: Solving Sudoku puzzles can increase your chances of getting hired and promoted.
